Hayato Kanzaki is a bounty hunter from the Star Gladiator series. Most people recognize him from Marvel vs Capcom 2 as the plasma sword wielding warrior. Nonetheless, Hayato is one of the coolest looking characters you will come across in any game. In fact, both versions of him exude confidence (even if Black Hayato is a cold merciless slayer). Let’s break it down. Hayato wears a sleeveless black compression tank, a torn white shirt, torn skinny black pants, black gloves with metallic guards, a golden belt, and a large metal head band. If you think Kanye was the pioneer of Red Octobers, you are sorely mistaken. Mr. Kanzaki was rocking this style back in 1996.
Neku Sakuraba is the 15-year old, anti-social, main protagonist of The World Ends With You. He finds solace in graffiti but has trouble developing relationships with people. Everyone has problems opening up at some point in their lives. However, he believes that society imposes its values on the individual. Despite his negativity and outlook on the world, he is extraordinarily imaginative. It shows through his clothing. He wears a black sleeveless shirt with an indigo strip down the middle outlined in gold, a yellow sweatband on his left wrist, white shorts, and shoes that match his sleeveless shirt. Most importantly, he always wears indigo headphones. He drowns out the world, seeking answers from within. When the only thing you can remember is your name, you must find inner strength.
“All the world needs is me. I got my values… so you can keep yours, all right?” — Neku Sakuraba
There are few people in history more iconic than Bruce Lee. He was the definition of a martial arts prodigy, respected by those before him and revered by those after him. His reflexes were lightning. His training was relentless. His philosophies are transcendent. However, what made Bruce Lee legendary was not his skill but rather the charisma by which he displayed his style of martial arts.
Although his technique was flawless, it was the belief that he was second to no fighter that immortalizes him. Characters such as Fei Long from Street Fighter and Marshall/Forrest Law from Tekken embody his essence, preserving his legacy through the video game medium.
Mirror’s Edge is one of my favorite games of the last generation. Its art style is simple and elegant. The flat colors of the buildings and semi-open metropolis are beautiful backdrops for this free running adventure game. Faith is at the center of this world. She is a “Runner”, a courier who carries physical communiqués around the city for revolutionary groups who want to avoid detection by technological means. Unlike most protagonists, Faith has a fairly simple appearance. However, that does not take away from her style. She primarily wears a black tank top, white cargo pants with black cuffs at the bottom, red laceless sneakers, and red fingerless gloves. Her design displays sophistication through simplicity.
“It is not a daily increase, but a daily decrease. Hack away at the inessentials.” ― Bruce Lee
Lee Chaolan is the most stylish, metro-sexual, flamboyant fighter in the Tekken Universe. It’s only fitting that the fighter with some of the flashiest moves has the outfits to go with his Bruce Lee-esque techniques. In Tekken 6, his primary outfit consists of black finger gloves, black leather pants, black boots, a black mesh shirt, and the signature purple vest with the face of a unicorn on the back. Is it a little over the top? Yes. However, what he wears perfectly represents his over-confident demeanor. Don’t let the silver hair and purple vest fool you. He is among one of the most lethal characters in Tekken. His swagger is not without skill. He is without a doubt the Prince of Tekken.
This sword wielding, ambidextrous gun-toting, demon slayer is one devilishly stylish killer. He wears a gray tanktop, black fingerless gloves, black faded jeans, black military boots and a hooded leather jacket with red interior linings and the British Union flag sewn on the left arm. They outfit perfectly matches his rebellious attitude towards authority and his fearlessness when faced with danger. He is young, confident, and torn between the light and dark. He questions his humanity, whether he is more human than demon or just another depraved spawn of the world that he is trying to eradicate. His style demeanor, and personality is reflected through his clothing.
“You can call me ‘Dante the demon killer.’ Has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?”
One should not be fooled that clothing can change the person inside. You are who you are. Recreate yourself. Dictate your perception.
The protagonist of Deus Ex: Human Revolution is not just an augmented killer. His style is simple but timeless. All black never goes out of style. To compliment his loner personality, he rocks black trousers with black enforcer boots. What would be a an all black outfit without the requisite black trench coat? The intricate designs on its shoulders are the perfect touch to an otherwise power-demanding appearance. Jay Z would be proud. A wise man once said:
“When you look good, you play good”
Style dictates personality. Personality dictates confidence. Confidence dictates action. From his appearance, he’s killing it in more ways than one.
